Very Versatile Meat Sauce
This meat sauce goes great with almost anything. No doubt your kids will put it to the test!
Serves: Serves: 6
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
- 1 1/4 cups chopped onions
- 3/4 teaspoon minced garlic
- 3/4 cup chopped celery
- 28-ounce can of diced tomato, undrained
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 1/4 teaspoon dried parsley
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning1
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper
- 3/4 teaspoon sugar
- 16-ounce can of tomato sauce
- 1 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms
- 6 cups cooked pasta
Directions:
- Spray Dutch oven with cooking spray and heat over medium-high heat.
- Add ground beef, onions, garlic and celery and cook, stirring frequently, until vegetables are tender and meat is no longer pink.
- Stir in remaining ingredients except mushrooms and pasta; bring to a boil over high heat.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, 45 minutes. Add mushrooms and cook 15 to 20 minutes, until softened.
- Sauce can be refrigerated or frozen. When ready to serve: Thaw sauce in refrigerator or microwave; reheat on stovetop or in microwave oven. Serve over favorite cooked pasta or baked potatoes.
Tips:
- For vegetarians or those who don't eat red meat: Substitute 1 1/2 pounds textured soy protein crumbles or extra-lean ground turkey for ground beef.
