Very Versatile Meat Sauce

This meat sauce goes great with almost anything. No doubt your kids will put it to the test!

  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 1/4 cups chopped onions
  • 3/4 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 3/4 cup chopped celery
  • 28-ounce can of diced tomato, undrained
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning1
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 3/4 teaspoon sugar
  • 16-ounce can of tomato sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms
  • 6 cups cooked pasta

  1. Spray Dutch oven with cooking spray and heat over medium-high heat.
  2. Add ground beef, onions, garlic and celery and cook, stirring frequently, until vegetables are tender and meat is no longer pink.
  3. Stir in remaining ingredients except mushrooms and pasta; bring to a boil over high heat.
  4. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, 45 minutes. Add mushrooms and cook 15 to 20 minutes, until softened.
  5. Sauce can be refrigerated or frozen. When ready to serve: Thaw sauce in refrigerator or microwave; reheat on stovetop or in microwave oven. Serve over favorite cooked pasta or baked potatoes.
  • For vegetarians or those who don't eat red meat: Substitute 1 1/2 pounds textured soy protein crumbles or extra-lean ground turkey for ground beef.
