ANABEL: Lenny, I’m going to show you how to make some really simple baby purees for Oscar. If you can start by peeling that apple.

LENNY: Yep

ANABEL: And over here I’ve got a trio of root vegetables. So here I’ve got carrot, parsnip, and sweet potato. And I’ve steamed them over here, because I like to steam them rather than boil them because it preserves the nutrients. A lot of vitamins are water-soluble.

LENNY: Can you also microwave them

ANABEL: Yes, that’s really good, actually. Some people don’t realize that microwaving is actually a very, very good way of cooking. So I’m going to put this into a blender. I like to use these stick blenders, they’re really easy on the washing out and they’re good for small amounts.

And I find that when you’re starting to give your baby purees, like right at the beginning, that it’s a good idea to give them a little bit of milk first. Because if they’re frantically hungry they are less receptive to solid foods, so I like to give them a little bit of milk and then start giving them the solid foods.

And I also like to hold them in my arms and give them a cuddle, you know, not just sit them in a chair, because it’s all about the love and caring and nurturing. It’s like breastfeeding. When you breastfeed your baby, they love it—it’s not just the milk, it’s they’re close to you. I think it’s the same when you start with solids.

Okay, so I’m going to just whizz this. I love the orange color.

LENNY: It’s full of goodness. It is lovely
